I've been trying a couple of DIY shampoo recipes recently and I can't say I'm sold just yet. Before my adventure with DIY shampoo, I had switched to buying shampoo with no added preservatives, alcohols, or anything else I couldn't pronounce basically haha. My hair adjusted well to the shampoos that I tried when I was buying them... so I thought, well why not cut out the middle man and just make it myself? I googled various recipes, watched diy videos, read comments and more comments, and I finally dove in and made my own batch of shampoo. I tried a mixture I found on youtube. Her version was ok... it cleaned my hair but I still felt it was weighed down a bit and I wasn't 100% satisfied. It smelled wonderful though! Then I tried the DIY shampoo made with baking soda and water only...
Yes, two ingredients... can it actually work? Well that just depends on your hair type I would imagine. I like the simplicity. When I massage this shampoo into my scalp, I can feel it working and loosening all the excess oils without stripping them completely. On the DIY blog, they recommend allowing the shampoo to work for a couple of weeks in order to feel the complete results... So far, I'm done with week one... and I intend to let it work another week before I resort to trying something else... but so far I'm not feeling too confident about this. I hope to find that another week will change my mind and that this simple shampoo can keep my hair clean and chemical free :)
Try these out... you have nothing to loose! They are cheap, chemical free options to keep you healthy. Everything we put on our skin is absorbed into our system and that includes all those horrible chemicals and products used in shampoos and conditioners. Our ancestors didn't have them around and I'm sure they survived just fine without them and you can too. If you are not a diy person at all, try looking for a better alternative for hair care. There are vegan shampoos out there in your local health food store (I got mine at Sprouts and I've also purchased them at Target.)
